Thanet Green Party Living Green initiative

Our living green initiative

Thanet Green Party’s Living Green initiative aims to help everyone in Thanet live a greener and better life.

With current worries about the cost of living, the great news is that a greener life usually means a cheaper life.  So we’ll be focusing particularly on how to save money by saving the planet!

Following the great reception we had to the hints and tips on living more sustainably that we shared during Thanet’s Big Green Week, we’ve set up a new Living Green page on our website – see below – full of information to help with greener and cheaper living. We’ll be sharing this in our social media messaging too, and anyone who has useful tips or ideas to share is welcome to send them to us by email on thanetgreenparty@gmail.com or tweet them to us on @greens4thanet.

We aim to build a great information resource that can help us all take action to live more sustainably – and more affordably too!

Saving energy

Advice on warm homes, insulation and saving energy at home

Things that cost nothing

  • Turn off appliances when you aren’t using them
  • Change to low energy light bulbs
  • Get a smart meter
  • Do not overheat your house
  • Look into changing to a more green energy supplier. This may not save you money, but it may also not cost anymore. There are many suppliers who provide 100% green electricity now.

Things that cost money up-front

But you may be able to get help from the government or conservation groups! See advice from TDC on available funding.

  • Investigate fitting
    • loft insulation
    • double glazing
    • wall insulation in your house
  • Get solar panels on your roof which will provide electricity without using fossil fuels (you can also charge your electric bike using them). In February, TDC launched a bulk purchase scheme for battery storage and solar panels. It’s free to register for either or both, and the more people who join the scheme, the cheaper the items become.
  • Install a heat pump for low carbon heating.

Struggling with energy costs?

TDC’s Home Energy Officer, Eve Lockton-Goddard, can advise you: contact her via the TDC main switchboard on 01843 577000. Thanet District Council declared a climate emergency on Thursday 11 July 2019. See what they’ve resolved to do.
