Becky Wing and Trevor Roper at the SONIK Joinng Hands protest at QEQM

Our three TDC Green Councillors Trevor Roper, Becky Wing and Mike Garner along with nearly 300 other people, met up outside the QEQM Hospital on 3rd August to protest about the proposed reduction of services. The “Join Hands” demonstration was organised by campaign group Save Our NHS in Kent (SONIK). People attended not only from Thanet, but also Canterbury, Ashford, Folkestone and Deal.

Of particular worry is a proposal to move the Stroke Unit to Ashford’s William Harvey Hospital which is over an hour away. There are also discussions about moving or downgrading the Accident and Emergency and Maternity Units. The NHS in Kent and Medway however say that the hyper acute stroke unit proposals are supported by local, regional and national specialists.

Join Hands For Our Hospital is the latest event in the campaign by SONIK to retain services in Thanet. The group is also mounting a judicial review of the decision to reduce the number of hospitals offering acute stroke services in Kent and Medway in favour of three specialised hyper-acute units.
